Southold is a hamlet in the Town of Southold, on Long Island's North Fork, and it shares its name with the town. Its center runs along Main Road, with shops, restaurants, and older buildings, and the farmland and vineyards of the North Fork begin just beyond it.

Southold sits between two bodies of water. To the south, Founders Landing is a waterfront park on Southold Bay. To the north, Horton Point Lighthouse stands on a bluff above Long Island Sound, with a park around it. In between, farm stands and vineyards line Main Road and the roads around the hamlet.

The housing follows the land. Older homes and farmhouses sit near Main Road and the hamlet center, cottages and water view homes are found near the bay and the Sound, and newer builds stand on land that was once farmland. Lot sizes vary widely, and there is a mix of year round homes and seasonal ones. A farmhouse near the center and a newer home near the water are priced against very different sales, so we compare each house with its own kind.

The Southold station is on the LIRR line that runs out to Greenport, and Main Road connects the hamlet east to Greenport and west toward Mattituck and Riverhead.
