Port Jefferson is a village in the Town of Brookhaven set around a deep harbor on Long Island Sound. It was a shipbuilding center in the nineteenth century, and the village still turns toward the water. The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company runs a car ferry across the Sound to Bridgeport, Connecticut, right from the foot of the village.

Downtown, often called lower Port, packs restaurants, shops, and inns along Main Street and East Main Street. Harborfront Park stretches along the water with open lawns and the Port Jefferson Village Center, which hosts events through the year. Uptown, at the top of Main Street, the Port Jefferson station is the eastern end of the LIRR Port Jefferson Branch.

The village is hilly, and the housing follows the hills. Historic homes, Victorians, and former sea captains' houses sit on the streets that rise from the harbor, many with water views. Colonials and capes fill the surrounding blocks, and condominiums and townhouses offer lower maintenance options close to downtown. Just south, Port Jefferson Station and Terryville add ranches, capes, split levels, and colonials on suburban lots.
